A few years ago, the United States Racquetball Association commissioned the construction of a court that has been used for both amateur and professional events. The court is designed with a three-wall glass prototype, which became the basis for the Pick a Ball Court. The four-wall version of the court is fully enclosed with a glass front wall, ceiling, and lights that are suitable for television broadcasts.
In recent decades, governing bodies of amateur and professional Squash have effectively broadcasted and displayed various types of glass courts globally. However, it is worth noting that these courts were primarily designed for Squash and may not be the best fit for other racquet sports like Pickleball, Racquetball, or Wallyball. Therefore, it is essential to develop specialized courts that cater to the unique requirements of each sport to ensure maximum performance and safety for the players. By doing so, we can create a better playing experience for athletes across multiple racquet sports and support their growth and development.
Joe Garcia, the inventor of Wallyball, faced the challenge of promoting and popularizing the sport in the early 1980s when social media was non-existent. Rather than bringing players to the Racquetball clubs, he opted to bring the Racquetball club to the players. To achieve this, he strategically chose high traffic locations such as shopping malls, outdoor festivals, and events to showcase the court sports. By doing so, he was able to capture the attention of a wider audience and attract more players to the sport.
The original design and production of a portable racquetball court utilized Dupont Lucite panels instead of glass. A debut presentation of this court was held at a shopping mall in Los Angeles, which attracted a weekly total of 250,000 visitors. The court was prepared for racquetball, a net was set up for Wallyball, and the back wall was movable for squash. This idea gave birth to the concept of a multi-court sports club.
